DEUSTO hosts an international meeting of the European anti-rumor strategy to fight the rise of xenophobic attitudes in cities

On 02 April 2019, the University of Deusto hosted a 3 days-meeting of the URBACT III - TRANSFER NETWORKS RUMOURLESS CITIES project. Coordinated by the municipality of Amadora (Portugal), Rumorless Cities is a European network that includes six municipalities, including Bilbao, together with Cardiff (Wales), Hamburg-Altona (Germany), Warsaw (Poland), Alba Iulia (Romania) and Ioannina (Greece). The objective of the initiative is to create and consolidate a network of people and entities committed to values such as interculturality, social cohesion and the fight against discrimination.

The meeting focused on the challenges at European level: how to combat discrimination and racist discourses, as well as the emergence of trends of marked xenophobic character, and ways to make effective equality of treatment and opportunities. The event is an opportunity for technicians, politicians and researchers involved in the struggle for coexistence, as well as an opportunity to exchange experiences and coordinate action strategies.

The antiRUMORES strategy is actively implemented in Bilbao by more than 200 agents deployed in four districts of the city. The University of Deusto has been involved in various training and awareness-raising activities supporting this initiative.
