New survey article, built upon the collaboration between the University of Deusto and the University Austral of Chile. Is a massive deployment of renewable-based low voltage direct current microgrids feasible?

We are glad to share our new survey article, built upon the collaboration between the University of Deusto and the University Austral of Chile. Both were funded by Fundación IBERDROLA, ATELIER, and WHY projects.

This thriving research collaboration produced two papers, the first paper, PART I covered aspects like Grid connections, Distribution topologies, and Voltage standardization of low-voltage DC microgrids (LVDC) renewable-based (published in the top-ranked renewable list of journals, Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews).


The second paper, PART II covers key aspects for a successful massification of Low Voltage Direct Current Microgrids, such as Converters, protections, and controllers renewable-based (published in the well-known Elsevier journal, Energy Report).

Both papers analyse the challenges and possible solutions that these kinds of microgrids have to tackle. These publications are complementarian, both closed the circle open over capital aspects of the distributed generation, speeding up the use of renewable sources. Besides, the novelty of these survey papers not rely only on technical issues but also on social issues, like energy poverty, inequalities produced by the lack of electricity, etc.

To sum up, we conduct a debate about the feasibility of these new renewable-based distribution systems and provide solutions to reduce the transition gap between the current energy network and the upcoming DC energy microgrids. LVDC microgrids can help to achieve positive energy districts (PEDs) upon a cost-efficiency scheme.
